Weezer vs. 311

Notice how I name the titles with "vs." between them? That's because I have always thought I would mix these together as a DJ like DJ Vadim.

Anyways, this song called "Jamie" by Weezer was one of my favorites as a kid (1996). I found it on some rare CD Called "DCG Rarities." I found it used for 3.99 at aThe Record Exchange in Portland. You might know it from their special edition of the Blue Album.

311's album Evolver came out in 2003 I think before Weezer re-released their song. 311's track "Dont' Dwell" is a blatant rip off! Scroll down to check it out.

Remember, hit >>| to go to the next track or let it play through. As always, we'll play the suspected thief first:

DJ Shadow vs. The Roots

Aright, so I love the Roots. I'd like to think that they don't "steal music," - they just give props to other artists by taking what they've done and giving it a new flavor.

I just picked up their newest album "Rising Down" and so far as I've heard, it sounds nice (I'm actually just listening to it as I'm typing,) BUT there is something very familiar about track 2!

Rising Down (feat. Mos Def and Styles P) - the title track, has sick guitar line that you might recognize! Hear it? It's from DJ Shadow's "Hardcore Hip-hop" on the Private Repress album.

Check them out, side by side:

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen, and Welcome!

If you know what song that comes from (without google-ing it), I'll give you bonus points.

In this blog, I will keep track of every song I hear that sounds like another one. This might range from the chorus of a indy rock song, to the hook of a hip-hop classic. As one of my favorite artists Ayentee says: "I don't create anything new, I just recycle."

And its true, maybe we're running out of original material in the collective creative consciousness. Oh, that's deep.

Alright, that said - lets get this blog rolling.

Oh by the way, I'm Austin. I have so much free time, and I didn't know what better to do with it. Haha.. Actually, I am a pretty busy guy. But I promise to you guys out there: If you subscribe to my blog, I won't let you down! I listen to music all day, and crave new and old licks that I haven't heard - subconsciously looking for similarities in the RAM of my brain.

I might forget names. I might even forget a face. But I will not forget a beat, sample, or melody.

Please comment on blog entries often so that I know this matters some how, alright? Thanks yo. and in exchange, I'll upload parts of songs so you can hear what I'm talking about.

Peace,

Austin
